FFA and CTE

The Agriculture, Food and Natural Resource Program at Southcrest Christian School has been skillfully designed to:
  • Offer students the opportunity for hands-on learning experiences through projects, service, and collaboration with local experts.
  • Students will explore future post-secondary options, leadership development, career and college preparation, and communication skills as it relates to Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources.
  • Students enrolled in AFNR classes will be eligible for Southcrest FFA membership. The FFA works in conjunction with classroom instruction and Supervised Agricultural Experiences (SAE projects) to allow students the opportunity to use what they learn in the classroom to compete for scholarships, awards and FFA degrees.

You are absolutely welcome to, but the AFNR program, as well as FFA has grown significantly beyond their “Future Farmers of America” roots. Students are encouraged to explore any of the 50 different Career and Leadership Development Events offered, including Radio Broadcasting, Job Interview, Talent Contest, Agribusiness, and Science Fair to name a few.

College and Career Readiness

  • 8th grade
  • Commonly referred to as “Careers”
  • Explore post-secondary options as well as the 16 Career Clusters through project and research-based learning. Students will develop a resume and other documents related to both college and employment applications that will progress with them through their CTE careers.

Principles of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources

  • 8th-12th
  • Commonly referred to as “Principles”
  • This is a prerequisite for all other AFNR courses
  • This class offers a little bit of everything.

Agriculture Mechanics and Metal Technology

  • Offered after Principles of AFNR
  • Commonly referred to as “ Ag Mech”
  • This course is most closely related to traditional “shop” classes. Students will benefit from project and research-based learning with a large emphasis on shop safety, fabrication, leadership and employability skills. Students will research, plan/design, select materials and execute a variety of wood, metal, plumbing, concrete and electrical projects with expert guidance.

Small Animal Management/ Equine Science

  • Offered after Principles of AFNR
  • The course focuses on the health and husbandry of small animals (cats, dogs, chickens, rabbits, exotics) in the fall, and equine (primarily horses) in the spring.
