Superintendent's Slant

Parent Smarter

All of us care about our child's grades. Sometimes we care more than they do. By modeling responsibility ourselves, we raise the odds that they will be high achievers. Research shows that if we demonstrate empathy rather than anger when a child receives a poor score, we again, up the odds that they will improve and over-come. Empathy is powerful! Love and Logic reminds us to re-spond with sincere love and concern. We might say something like, "Wow, I bet that grade was disappointing for you. Let me know if I can help you in any way. I know you have what it takes to learn this and remember I love you no matter what your grade is."

That kind of response allows them to own the problem and gives them the confidence that they are capable of dealing with it!
